Horse Racing Handicapping Basics

If you want to achieve any sort of measure of (long term) success with horse racing, then it is imperative that with this form of sports betting, that you come to understand and appreciate the unique form of sports handicapping associated with it. The handicapping system used within the horse racing world is infinitely more complex and involved than other modes of sports handicapping and this is often enough to put off all but the most diehard of novices.

Whenever we speak of handicaps in the context of horse racing, this means that horses, all of which have differing levels of skill and ability are pitted against one another in the same race and this is justified on the basis that the horses which are considered to be more superior to the lower ranking horses will be forced to carry additional weight to balance things out. The reverse is also applicable, i.e. a lower ranking horse will be required to carry less weight during the course of the race.

When it comes to this particular form of sports handicapping, there is one invaluable tool you cannot afford to be without and that is the Daily Racing Form as the DRF contains a wealth of pertinent statistical information about each and every one of the horses that is racing. Every single possible morsel of relevant information is included and so details such as:

  • The amount of money the horse has earned in its lifetime
  • Past performance in all subsequent races
  • The speed of the horse.

All of these different items of information will need to be weighed and considered by the gambler, in their determination of which horse they should place a bet on.

Analyse and compare both the past performance record of any horse, along with its current form, and if you are forced between picking a tie breaker between any two horses which have a similar/equal past performance rating then let the current form value be the tie-breaker for you.

Also try and determine if a horse has been taking any medication. If the horse has been ingesting Lasix then rest assured, that a good result is near certain.

Horse Racing Basics

Once coined as the “sport of kings” horse racing enjoyed a stalwart reputation for a considerable number of years as the most popular form of sport which people placed a wager on. This popularity and dominance as a cultural icon has steadily declined in recent years for a variety of reasons, partly due to the fact that online gambling has become more commonplace, and that there are forms of sports betting. Horse racing does not attract as many new converts as it once did and this is because it is exponentially more difficult when compared to other forms of sports betting, and sports handicapping. The fact that the bookmakers charger a higher amount of commission for this form of sports betting is also another issue that has served to alienate new recruits.

That said, if you are new to the challenging, exhilarating and ultimately remarkable world of hors racing then you need to learn the ropes if you want to be able to walk home with some money in your pocket. If you are prepared to take the time to learn how to contend with this form of betting, then you can make a substantial amount of profit.

First off, the question that should be on your lips with this particular form of sports betting is: “what are the methods to use in order to pick a winning horse consistently?” as you can imagine, this is not an easy task to learn because there is no magic bullet. All you can do is learn the different signs that would indicate a favourable outcome, and then gauge your reaction from there.

Consider the distance of the race, as a general rule of thumb, the longer the distance of a race is, then the more significant the weight of a horse will be as a factor to consider in your calculations. Without a doubt however, one of the best variables to consider is the actual speed of the horse in question and one of the great benefits of betting on horse racing in America is that because the design of the racetracks are universal, this means that the results will tend to be consistent.
